Review
Excerpt- - Peter Kater and Sacred Earth - Wind of the East (with
Guest Artists Arvel Bird and Joseph Firecrow) (Red Feather Music)
by
John Diliberto, Producer of Echoes
"Arvel
Bird's violin has a warm melodic tone and lyrical sound that
whirls through Kater's arrangements. While there's little intrinsically
"native" in the violin, Joseph Fire Crow is a student of traditional
flute songs who nevertheless plays freely within this music,
creating soulful melodies and bird-like calls. I love the way
the flute and violin lines interweave. On "The Eagle's Story,"
Bird's short, arcing violin sounds like a call out to Fire Crow,
whose flute emerges from the violin echo at the beginning. It's
one of the more energized tunes on the album, with melodies
that spin between the two native musicians and guitarist Mike
Hamilton, the unsung hero of this recording. His rhythm comping
and finger-picked interplay tie many of these tracks together."

Thank
you to the First Nations Composer Initiative (FNCI)
for awarding a grant to complete the recording of Arvel's newest
CD project, Tribal Music Suite, Concerto for Violin and Native
Flutes! This wonderful organization has helped many, many native
artists in a variety of disciplines.
The FNCI
program is dedicated to serving the needs of American Indian/
Alaska Native/ First Nations/ Indigenous makers of new music throughout
Indian Country. The FNCI is committed to supporting activities
that build the careers of Indigenous creative musicians, including
commissions, residencies, performance and production, travel/study,
and outreach.

Congratulations
to . . . our friends at Oklahoma City's CBS Affiliate
Channel 9 for their video journal on Arvel Bird which earned them
1st Place for Best Editing and 2nd Place for Best Feature.
The video journal was shot in July 2007 and aired several times
in October 2007. Kudos to Bill Merickel who had the vision and
Alex Cameron who gave the video journal a voice.
You can view
the video journal yourself by downloading the 7 minute documentary
from Arvel's Electronic Press Kit.
